Stephanie S. Newberg, Deputy Commissioner
Texas Department of Banking

Stephanie S. Newberg was named a Deputy Commissioner of the Texas Department of Banking on December 31, 1999. Previously, Ms. Newberg served seven years as Director of Special Audits and Accounting for the Texas Department of Banking, and as such, was responsible for the non-bank supervision programs and the agency’s accounting function. The Special Audits Division oversees the non-bank supervision programs which include the licensing, regulation and supervision of funeral contract providers, perpetual care cemeteries, and money service businesses. In addition to retaining her oversight responsibilities related to these areas, she is also responsible for overseeing the Policy Development, Administrative Services and the Private Child Support Enforcement sections of the agency.

Ms. Newberg has numerous years of experience in the accounting, audit, and funeral industry fields, beginning her career with the accounting firm of Ernst & Whinney in June 1982. In July 1987, Newberg joined Golden Era Services, Houston, Texas as Comptroller of the Austin Region, which consisted of six funeral homes, two cemeteries and a pre-need sales office, being promoted in September 1990 to Vice President & Controller. Ms. Newberg joined the Texas Department of Banking in November 1992 as Director of Special Audits.

Ms. Newberg is a graduate of Texas A&M University where she received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. She is also a Certified Public Accountant.
